Post Gastric Bypass Surgical Solutions - Body Lift, Tummy Tuck, Liposuction
George Marosan, MD Bellevue, WA
The Today Show on NBC recently profiled a West Virginia man who weighed 745 pounds before gastric bypass and now must undergo a series of body revision procedures to eliminate 100 pounds of excess skin. While this instance is unique because of the massive amount of weight loss, post gastric bypass patients are now beginning to accept that there will most likely be some plastic surgery down the road.
We have all heard statistics concerning obesity and know full well that Americans are constantly fighting the battle of the bulge. At least 60% of adults in this country are overweight, and a growing percentage are morbidly obese, which is 100 pounds or more over ideal body weight. Obesity poses a tremendous health risk to the individual and puts additional strain on our already buckling health care system. Those who suffer from morbid obesity are more likely to contract diabetes, suffer from poor circulation and high blood pressure, and have an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Excessive weight can cause degenerative joint disease in the hips and knees and in many cases contribute to a shortened lifespan. Recent advances in bariatrics like gastric stapling, gastric banding, or gastric bypass via endoscopic surgery have helped many morbidly obese individuals improve their health, feel more energetic, and prolong or reverse many of the dangerous medical issues. Often when a person loses a lot of weight, the result is an excess of loose skin in the lower abdomen, thighs, arms, sagging breasts. The stretched out skin is limited in how much tightening it can naturally do. These skin folds can be very irritating, and cause a bit of irony for many of these individuals now that they feel better about themselves and have more energy are still shy in public since they dont like the way they look. Dr. Marosan has been helping these individuals for years. With modern body contouring techniques he can achieve excellent results with a combination of liposuction and excision of excess loose tissues. Removing excessive tissues off the abdomen and tightening the underlying muscles to improve the waistline, lift the buttocks and thighs to improve skin and soft tissue tone, contour the arms and remove the "bat wings," elevate and make the breasts fuller with a short scar technique and recontour the face and neck. Most of these procedures can be done on an outpatient basis, depending on the persons overall health. Dr. Marosan was the first plastic surgeon in the Seattle area to introduce the VASER Liposelection, a third generation ultrasonic liposuction machine. This is a technological leap over the existing UAL (ultrasound-assisted liposuction). It can deliver continuous or pulsed ultrasound energy via smaller grooved probes, which are more efficient at lower energy levels and can be used in more delicate areas. VASER shortens surgery and anesthesia time, decreases tissue trauma, leads to less bruising and faster recovery with better results and is safer for patients. This gives the surgeon a much more precise sculpting capability which in turn reduces the potential revision rate (this could be as high as 7-10% with traditional liposuction). The advantage to the surgeon is that he can deliver better results and more precise sculpting with the VASER over current technology and have many happy and satisfied patients.

Similar studies have been done using a survey system. This type of study would ask fellow professionals who they would recommend. The CRCA found this method to be more of a popularity contest. For instance, professionals who work in a large office or hospital have much more of a chance of being mentioned as opposed to a professional who has a small private practice. In addition many professionals have a financial arrangement for back and forth referrals.
