Two Seattle area physicians already own and offer the Fraxel CO2 treatment: Dr. Craig Jonov in downtown Seattle and Lynnwood, and Dr. Michele Vesely.
On the fourth and final installment of the Today Show series titled Mini Medical Miracles, the new FDA approved Fraxel CO2 laser resurfacing treatment was profiled in depth for its abilities to eliminate wrinkles, tighten skin, and potentially prevent the need for a face lift later in life. Dr. Christopher Zachary, professor at UC Irvine, said "There's no doubt in my mind, that this is indeed the biggest breakthrough in wrinkle removal in the last 5 to 10 years." The Fraxel repair laser was approved by the FDA last fall, and according to the report, it is "not out to replace the face lift but to get to you before you ever need one." Dr. Zachary continued, "This is going to change the way physicians think about treating the skin, rejuvenating the skin - if you attack wrinkles, furrows with the Reliant repair device when patients are 40 or 50, patients are never going to get the saggy skin that they used to get when they were 50 or 60." The report then stated that what the Fraxel laser does is shrink your skin, lay down myriads of tiny dots which are actually a column of vaporized skin, then begins a very immediate rapid healing. How differ from other laser like the carbon dioxide laser ?
Again, Dr. Zachary explained that "the [CO2] laser has fallen out of favor because of the persist redness, swelling and potential for scarring. With this technology you're only in the office an hour, down for a few days and essentially back to work in 5-6 days." Dr. Nancy Snyderman, NBC chief medical editor discussed the report with Matt Lauer, explaining that the Fraxel repair is "really intended for the 40-50 year old who doesn't have that really sagging skin yet, it's really a preemptive stirke against the face lift." The treatment may need to be repeatead every 5 to 10 years, but is very safe. Dr. Snyderman said, "There will be a lot of people, men and women, who will be interested in this treatment." Earlier segments in the series featured treatments for baldness, insomnia, and dandruff.
